China, Russia Oppose New UN Peacekeeping Mission in Haiti

The Facts

  • At a meeting of the UN Security Council arranged on Wednesday at their request, China and Russia expressed their opposition to transforming the Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission in Haiti into a UN peacekeeping mission.

  • Representatives for both countries alleged that conditions on the ground would expose peacekeepers to great security risks, with China's Geng Shuang calling for the council to focus on enabling the MSS to fulfill its recently renewed mandate.

The Spin

Pro-establishment narrative

It's hard to understand the reasoning leading China and Russia to oppose an official UN peacekeeping mission in Haiti. As the understaffed and underfunded MSS has failed to address gang violence in Haiti, this transition has become the only hope for the Caribbean country.

Establishment-critical narrative

Though a new UN peacekeeping operation would secure enough funding and troops for the mission in Haiti, this move is by no means a silver bullet in the fight against gangs — and it could prove deleterious to such an effort. Given the situation on the ground and past experiences in the country, deploying blue helmets to Haiti would be a mistake.

Nerd narrative

There's a 60% chance that Haiti will experience a civil war before 2036, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

New York Hospital Performs First Fully Robotic Double-Lung Transplant

The Facts

  • The world's first fully robotic double lung transplant was performed on Oct. 22 at the NYU Langone Health Center in Manhattan. The recipient was Cheryl Mehrkar, a 57-year-old New York resident, who has since been released from hospital.

  • The procedure on Mehrkar, a scuba divemaster and motorcyclist whose chronic obstructive pulmonary disease worsened during the COVID-19 pandemic, marks a breakthrough in robotic surgery and minimally invasive transplants.

The Spin

Narrative A

Robotic surgery marks a revolutionary leap in organ transplantation, delivering unmatched precision and reducing complications for donors and recipients alike. This innovation is reshaping medical possibilities, ensuring safer procedures and better outcomes. While challenges like cost and accessibility remain, the global shift toward robotic methods highlights a profound transformation, promising a future where technology empowers surgeons to save lives with extraordinary efficiency.

Narrative B

While robotic surgery promises precision and innovation, it carries significant risks that demand caution. Mechanical failures, like malfunctioning robotic arms, can complicate procedures, while extended surgery times increase patient vulnerability. Unique hazards, such as unintended burns from electrical arcing, add to the mix. Surgeon experience and robust training are critical to safety, yet these remain inconsistent. Robotic surgery requires a delicate balance of optimism and vigilance.

Nerd narrative

There's a 50% chance that the first medical treatment based on nanorobots will happen by September 2034, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Putin Confirms Use of Hypersonic Missile, Warns US and UK

The Facts

  • Russian Pres. Vladimir Putin confirmed his country's use of a hypersonic, intermediate-range ballistic missile on Ukraine on Thursday, stating that the successful "test" of this missile came in response to the US and UK permitting Ukraine to strike Russia with their weapons.

  • Earlier in the day, Ukrainian officials claimed that Russia deployed a non-nuclear intercontinental ballistic missile in the attack on the city of Dnipro, but this was disputed by a Western intelligence official who spoke to ABC News.

The Spin

Pro-establishment narrative

The US takes seriously the reckless rhetoric coming out of Russia. However, the US remains focused on supporting Ukraine for as long as it takes through Putin's war of choice and war of aggression. If he is concerned about escalation, he can pull his troops from Ukraine at any moment and stop invading his neighbor.

Pro-Ukraine narrative

This is the second major escalation by Russia. First, North Korean troops were deployed in the conflict, and now the Kremlin has deployed nuclear-capable weapons on the battlefield. The West must respond to these provocations to show Putin that his actions are unacceptable.

Pro-Russia narrative

Russia has repeatedly warned the US and UK that firing its weapons into Russian territory, which cannot be done without the involvement of its specialists, would mark their direct participation in the conflict. Russia prefers to settle this conflict peacefully, but if provocations continue, it has no choice but to respond.

Nerd narrative

There is a 10% chance that there will be a US-Russia war before 2050, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Trump Chooses Pam Bondi for Attorney General After Gaetz Withdrawal

The Facts

  • Hours after Matt Gaetz announced his withdrawal, US Pres.-elect Donald Trump nominated veteran prosecutor Pam Bondi as his new attorney general.

  • Trump revealed his choice in a tweet on his Truth Social platform Thursday evening, writing, "I have known Pam for many years — she is smart and tough, and is an AMERICA FIRST Fighter, who will do a terrific job as Attorney General!"

The Spin

Republican narrative

Pres.-elect Donald Trump has made an excellent choice in selecting Pam Bondi for US attorney general. She has proven herself as an outstanding legal talent, having served both as a prosecutor and as the Sunshine State's attorney general for eight years. She is a real leader who will advocate for all Americans and restore justice and security to the nation.

Democratic narrative

Like Matt Gaetz, Pam Bondi is a Trump loyalist who is prepared to protect him in every regard. Unlike Gaetz, however, she is competent — meaning she will actually be able to implement Trump's concerning agenda. Democrats may disagree with her ideologically, but she knows what she's doing. She understands law and justice. That's why she is a more dangerous and effective pick than Gaetz.

GOP Senator Moves to Eliminate Department of Education

The Facts

  • Republican US Sen. Mike Rounds of South Dakota introduced legislation on Thursday to eliminate the Department of Education, which was first established in 1979. Rounds said he had been pursuing such legislation "for years."

  • He said it would "eliminate" the department and redistribute all critical federal programs to other agencies. For example, Indigenous programs would be moved to the Department of the Interior and student loans to the Treasury Department.

The Spin

Republican narrative

Since its inception, which was simply a quid pro quo between then-Pres. Jimmy Carter and a teachers union, the Department of Education has only prioritized federal overreach and ideological agendas over basic education. This has led to declining literacy rates and divisive curricula. Returning control to states and reallocating functions to existing agencies would improve efficiency and accountability.

Democratic narrative

The Department of Education is vital for equal access to education and the nation's democracy. It ensures funding for low-income schools, enforces anti-discrimination laws, supports students with disabilities, and distributes billions of dollars in grants and loans. Besides wasting time, expertise, and funding that is already in place, dismantling it risks deepening inequities, worsening teacher shortages, and abandoning federal accountability crucial for student success.

Brazil: Police Accuse Bolsonaro of Coup Plot

The Facts

  • In a statement issued on Thursday, Brazil's federal police formally accused former Pres. Jair Bolsonaro of plotting a coup d'état, trying to violently abolish the democratic rule of law, and involvement in a criminal organization after his 2022 election loss.

  • Three dozen other men were also accused — including four former cabinet ministers, the former intelligence chief, the chairman of Bolsonaro's Liberal Party, military personnel, and a political consultant to Argentina's Pres. Javier Milei.

The Spin

Left narrative

This may be just the first step toward holding Bolsonaro and his accomplices accountable for their coup attempt, but these recommended charges are great news because they indicate that investigators found enough evidence to believe they are guilty. It's shocking that a former president was behind a coup, and Bolsonaro eventually will end up in jail.

Right narrative

It's hardly a surprise that Brazilian authorities have formally called for Bolsonaro and several of his allies to be charged with coup plot. As long warned, the right-wing Brazilian leader has been politically persecuted since his first day out of office in a blatant example of leftist lawfare.

Nerd narrative

There's a 44.1% chance that Pres. Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will be reelected as Brazil's president in October 2026, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Judge Suspends Trump Hush Money Sentencing

The Facts

  • Manhattan Judge Juan Merchan has agreed to postpone US pres.-elect Donald Trump's Nov. 26 sentencing for his hush money case until after he's expected to leave office.

  • Trump was convicted in May by a Manhattan jury on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records related to a $130K payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election.

The Spin

Republican narrative

Despite their best efforts, the corrupt prosecutors and judges of New York have been forced to drop their witch hunt cases. While it shouldn't have taken a Republican landslide to reach this conclusion, the American people can rest assured that the man they voted for will be free to govern the country without worrying about left-leaning lawfare.

Democratic narrative

Despite Trump's criminal history, Democrats should consider ending all of his cases for the sake of democracy's stability. The election's outcome — where voters chose him despite high-profile charges — renders a verdict on their legitimacy. While these were legitimate convictions, the Constitution encourages American leadership not to set dangerous, politically driven precedents after an election.

Nerd narrative

There is a 2% chance that Donald Trump will be jailed or incarcerated before 2030, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Trudeau Suspends Sales Tax, Offers Canadians Checks

The Facts

  • Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a CA$6.3B ($4.5B) economic relief package, including a Goods and Services Tax (GST) break and a CA$250 ($143) rebate check to Canadians making CA$150K ($107K) or less.

  • The temporary GST break, which will reportedly cost CA$1.6B ($1.14B) on its own, will be in effect between Dec. 14 and Feb. 14. The one-time check, which will go out to an estimated 18.7M Canadians, will be sent in the spring.

The Spin

Right narrative

After causing the cost of living crisis and destroying Canadians with his COVID policies, Trudeau is conducting a shameful vote-buying scheme. Not only is this $250 offer a slap in the face to working Canadians, but many of the food items included in the tax break were already tax-exempt. This plan will not save the prime minister from his inevitable political demise.

Left narrative

Trudeau’s tax policy reflects an effort to provide immediate, broad relief during a global inflation crisis. While no one, not even the prime minister, would claim this is a complete economic solution, these measures demonstrate empathy and address widespread financial struggles, laying the groundwork for future stability.

Nerd narrative

There is an 85% chance that the Conservative Party will win the most seats in the next Canadian federal election, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

US Lawmakers Call for Classified Briefing on Turkey's Hamas Ties

The Facts

  • Thirty-seven Democratic and Republican lawmakers have called on the Biden admin. to offer a classified briefing on Turkey's support for Hamas in response to reports that the group's leadership has relocated from Doha, Qatar to Ankara. Turkey is a member of NATO and a US ally.

  • The letter, led by Reps. Dan Goldman (D-NY), Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ), Gus Bilirakis (R-Fla), and Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY), said that the reports of Hamas' move to Turkey "dramatically escalate existing concerns about Turkey's relationship" with the group, which is designated by the US as a terrorist organization.

The Spin

Pro-establishment narrative

Though there have been instances in which Turkey's unique geopolitical position has benefited the US and its Western allies, Ankara should be weary of hosting Hamas. The US has already shown that it is willing to act in terms of sanctioning Turkish figures who are willing to deal with terrorists. Indeed, Turkey must act wisely and maintain the values it shares with its allies.

Pro-Israel narrative

Hopefully, the coming Trump admin. will understand what the Biden admin. hasn't — Erdoğan is not a good ally and openly supports terror. In addition to its occupation of northern Cyprus, its hostility toward NATO-ally Greece, and relations with Putin's Russia, Erdoğan's Turkey has supported Hamas for over a decade. The US must ensure that Israel and Turkey return to their historic relationship of significant cooperation and trade.

Narrative C

It is rather hypocritical that the US thinks it can scold Turkey for having its own geopolitical calculations when Washington hosts members of designated terrorist groups. The ringleader of the terrorist Gülen Movement lived in Pennsylvania, and the US is actively supporting PKK terrorists in Syria, which has killed scores of Turkish civilians. Nonetheless, Israel's genocide in Gaza has forced Turkey's hand, and it must support the Palestinians.

Narrative D

Though Erdoğan may talk tough about Israel and nominally support the Palestinian cause, he's playing a geopolitical game to maximize Turkey's strategic position. Turkey and Israel have had many ups and downs in their relationship, and this will likely continue, though it depends on the leadership in Israel. Israeli-Turkish relations are certainly at a low point, but that does not mean that their historic relationship will come to an end.

Nerd narrative

There's an 8.6% chance that Turkey will be a member of the European Union by 2040, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
