Violence Erupts Against Israeli Soccer Fans in Amsterdam
Israel on Friday sent two planes to bring back Maccabi Tel Aviv Football Club fans from Amsterdam after they faced "antisemitic attacks" in several parts of the city on Thursday night.
According to Dutch police, dozens of Israeli supporters were beaten and injured in hit-and-run attacks, with five people hospitalized. Video clips appeared to show people being chased and kicked; a car was also seen hitting passers-by at high speed.
Pro-Israel narrative
For Israelis, the Israeli diaspora, and the Jewish community, the Amsterdam pogrom paints a bleak picture of the escalating dangers worldwide — emphasizing a resurgence of antisemitism. Often concealed as anti-Zionism, this hatred fuels disruptions, attacks, and a climate of rising hostility. Members of the Jewish community are increasingly marginalized, excluded, and subjected to intimidation and violence, often with state sponsorship. Urgent action is needed to confront this.
Pro-Palestine narrative
Israeli provocation is heightening risks for Jewish and Israeli communities worldwide, as recent violence in Amsterdam tragically demonstrates. Israel's aggressive policies under Netanyahu — especially in Gaza and the West Bank — have stirred resentment, reducing global sympathy despite valid security concerns. Actions by some Israeli supporters abroad feed this backlash — increasing anti-Israeli sentiments and tensions. The resulting insecurity endangers Jewish and Israeli lives globally as Palestinians continue to suffer.

First Auctioned Robot-Made Artwork Sells for Over $1M
A portrait of English mathematician Alan Turing made by the humanoid robot Ai-Da was sold at Sotheby's in New York on Thursday for $1.08M. This marked the first auction sale of a humanoid robot's artwork.
The digital image of Alan Turing, known as the pioneer of modern computer science, titled "A.I. God," received 27 bids and was anticipated to sell for about $180K.
Narrative A
Thursday's sale marks a watershed moment in the history of modern art and demonstrates how the partnership between humans and machines opens up a whole new world of innovation and creativity. The fact that this sale transcended expectations by fetching an astounding $1M speaks for itself AI is the future.
Narrative B
AI "art" is an oxymoron. Humans make art with creativity and intent, not algorithms. AI-generated "art" not only negatively impacts professional artists, but also discourages those aspiring to pursue careers in the art field. From movies to TV series and music to paintings, it seems that no area of the creative community is safe.
Nerd narrative
There is a 7% chance Tesla will be able to mass-produce humanoid robots by the end of 2027, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
Putin Praises 'Courageous' Trump, Says Russia is Ready for Dialogue
Russian Pres. Vladimir Putin on Thursday congratulated Donald Trump on his re-election, praising him as courageous in the way he responded to an assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania.
Speaking at a discussion forum in the Black Sea resort of Sochi, Putin said: "People show who they are in extraordinary circumstances. This is where a person reveals himself. And he showed himself, in my opinion, in a very correct manner, courageously. Like a man."
Pro-establishment narrative
Preying on Trump's well-documented fondness for flattery, these compliments from Putin are carefully calibrated statements in the hope that he can secure the deal he wants over Ukraine.
Pro-Russia narrative
As the Russian president said, the country is open to dialogue and is prepared to settle the conflict by peaceful means. However, Russia's goals over security concerns have not changed.
Nerd narrative
There's a 50% chance there will be a bilateral cease-fire or peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine by Jan. 2026, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
Iraq to Lower Age of Consent to 9
The Iraqi parliament is set to lower the legal marriage age from 18 to nine by amending a bill from 1959 called Law 188, which had established the current age of consent alongside other protections for women and girls.
The amendment, which is being pushed by conservative Shiite parties, will also strip women's right to divorce their husbands, have custody of their children, and collect inheritance.
Pro-establishment narrative
This amendment flagrantly undermines women’s and girls’ rights by not only pushing nine-year-old children into marriages, but also by removing protections in divorce and weakening inheritance rights. If passed, Iraq will have breached its obligations under international human rights treaties, such as the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The government must reconsider this alarming idea.
Establishment-critical narrative
What makes this so tragic is that Iraq, while not perfect, was not like this before the 2003 US invasion neighborhoods were vibrant, families were together, and both boys and girls went to school. Unfortunately, in its arrogant pursuit of killing Saddam Hussein, the US government ripped Iraq apart, leaving it open for radical factions to take over the government.
Nerd narrative
There is a 42% chance that Iraq will experience a civil war before 2036, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
UK: Jonathan Powell Appointed National Security Adviser
UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has appointed Jonathan Powell, Downing Street chief of staff between 1997 and 2007 under Tony Blair, as his new national security advisor.
Starmer said in a Cabinet Office statement that Powell had "devoted his career to protecting the interests of the country," and Powell himself said he was "honored" to take on the role.
Left narrative
Powell, a Blair era veteran, is an incredibly experienced political operative that will only benefit Starmer's premiership. He will not only provide stability on the international front but also bring wisdom to a Labour government that has faced criticism for its clumsy domestic policy strategy.
Right narrative
Starmer has appointed a man who willingly negotiated the surrender of the Chagos Islands—a piece of land integral to British strategic interests — as the country's national security advisor. The decision once again leaves the UK public lacking any confidence in Labour's foreign policy and is likely to only further damage the UK's international position.
Nerd narrative
There is a 70% chance that the UK will have a Labour prime minister on Jan. 1, 2030, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
US Fed Cuts Rates, Markets Soar After Trump Victory
The US Federal Reserve on Thursday unanimously approved a quarter-point interest rate cut, bringing the federal funds rate to a range between 4.5% and 4.75%, following Tuesday's reelection of former Pres. Donald Trump.
The reduction is a smaller move compared to September's half-point cut, as the Federal Reserve is seeking to maintain economic strength while keeping inflation on track to meet its 2% target. Over the summer, the Fed started this process by raising the rate to a range of 5.25% to 5.5% — a 23-year high.
Republican narrative
All it took was for Trump to get reelected to get America back on a positive roll. In addition to the Fed's interest rate cut, major manufacturers announced they're bringing jobs back to the US and China announced it wants to have better relations. In addition, numerous warring parties overseas have announced a desire for peace. This a strong start to what will be an even stronger term.
Democratic narrative
This announcement is being falsely accredited to Trump's reelection. This cut was made possible because inflation significantly cooled under the Biden administration. But there's a softening job market, and if Trump goes through with some of his promised economic policies another rate cut may not come, or worse, the economy could head in the opposite direction.
Nerd narrative
There's a 15% chance that the US will enter a recession before 2025, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
US Justice Department Requests Pause on Trump Case
US federal Judge Tanya S. Chutkan granted US Dept. of Justice (DOJ) special counsel Jack Smith’s request to pause the deadlines in his 2020 election interference case against Pres.-elect Donald Trump.
This comes two days after DOJ sources told NBC News that they were working to wind down their two cases against Trump — the other being the classified documents case.
Democratic narrative
Jack Smith should have been able to prosecute this case months ago, and despite the urgency to address Trump's 2020 election interference, he faced unnecessary obstacles from both the Trump campaign and the courts. While Judge Chutkan approved his filing, these delays — which were based on ironic claims that Smith was interfering in an election — ultimately undermined the DOJ's pursuit of justice.
Republican narrative
Jack Smith's actions resulted in interfering with public perceptions in the election, which is why even anti-Trump news outlets were calling him out on it. Just before the election, Smith filed a page long shot filing aimed at smearing Trump — but it didn't work and the country voted for Trump nonetheless. Smith, as well as all the state prosecutors who attacked Trump, are finally ending their bad faith witch hunts.
Nerd narrative
There is a 3% chance that Donald Trump will be jailed or incarcerated before 2030, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
Judge Dismisses Suit Against OpenAI
A federal judge Thursday dismissed a suit from two news organizations — Raw Story and AlterNet — against artificial intelligence company OpenAI, ruling the outlets were unable to show injury.
The outlets in February sued OpenAI, claiming it fed their articles into ChatGPT after removing copyright management information from the content in order to train its large language models.
Narrative A
This is a major legal victory for OpenAI and all companies training their large language models. It's also a warning against those who want to sue these companies, as the judge has made it clear plaintiffs better be able to show they've been injured and aren't just trying to get compensation for something that's not taking place. Moving forward, suing for violations of specific provisions of the DMCA may be unavailable to content creators.
Narrative B
OpenAI and its competitors aren't out of the woods yet. Even if suing for a violation of the DMCA may be a challenging path, there's still plenty of blatant copyright violation going on with these companies and several content creators — including large outlets like The New York Times. Eventually, these companies will have to compensate those whose work they're using to train their models while accumulating large sums of revenue.
Nerd narrative
There's a 50% chance that concern about artificial intelligence will go mainstream in the United States by January 2026, according to a Metaculus prediction community.
Canada: Trudeau Assembles Cabinet Team to Discuss Future Trump Presidency
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has re-established a special Cabinet committee on Canada-US relations to prepare for the incoming Donald Trump presidency. It will include the ministers of finance, foreign affairs, public safety, and industry.
The incoming Trump team, which campaigned on deporting millions of illegal immigrants and imposing international tariffs, has sparked fears in Canada over potential economic impacts and rising rates of immigrants heading north.
Left narrative
If Trump implements his desired policies, Canada will face negative consequences everywhere, from immigration and trade to currency devaluation and defense. Since Ottawa has already been through a Trump presidency, however, Trudeau has time to work with politicians in both countries to ensure Trump's most radical plans are thwarted. If he pre-emptively shores up support for NATO and free trade, among other things, Trump won't get to throw North America into chaos.
Right narrative
Trudeau's government is trying to project confidence right now because they know their policies have been subsidized by Joe Biden's America Last agenda. Once Trump is in office, he will actually expect Canada to pay its fair share on defense and clamp down on illegal immigration, the latter of which will put Canada's immigration system to the test. Once Trump begins making America great, Trudeau will be exposed for having made Canada weak.
